A language and culture event facilitated by Francianne Velho, a Brazilian language and culture teacher and researcher at Leiden University.

Festa Junina is one of Brazil’s favorite celebrations. With lively dances, bright decorations, and tasty traditional foods, this festival brings people together throughout June to enjoy popular traditions and honor saints like São João, Santo Antônio, and São Pedro.
Forró is at the center of this celebration, setting the mood and getting everyone dancing. At our event, we’ll explore how forró and Festa Junina are connected, and see how music, language, and culture create a joyful atmosphere.
Join us for a hands-on experience where you can:
• Dance forró (of course)
• Explore the meaning, sounds, and flow of the Brazilian Portuguese language through a classic song by Luiz Gonzaga
• Learn and dance the traditional quadrilha , a festive group circular dance that is at the center of the celebration
